Lady Bucs Complete Season Sweep of Walters State
Tuscaloosa- The Shelton State women's basketball team completed the season sweep of perennial powerhouse Walters State (TN). The Lady Bucs led nearly the whole game as they defeated the Lady Senators 67-50.
The Lady Bucs were led by freshman Alana Obianozie who posted a career-high 24 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Makala Hobdy posted a 13 point, 11 assist double-double and Julie Nekolna scored 9. The Lady Senators were led by Terryauna Griffin who posted 19 points and Kyra Perkins with 10.
The 1st quarter saw Obianozie and Hobdy score 14 of the Lady Bucs 17 total points as they had a 3-point advantage after the initial 10 minutes of play (17-14). The Lady Bucs turned up the defensive intensity in the 2nd quarter holding the Lady Senators to just 6 points, as Obianozie totaled 13 points in the 1st half. "I am so proud of our team and their response after losing such a tough battle yesterday," said head coach Madonna Thompson. "Coach (Jasmine) Coleman does such a great job with her team, and they got after us all night and made us hit tough shots."
The 2nd half saw the Lady Bucs increase their lead as they outscored the Lady Senators 19-10 in the 3rd quarter. The Lady Bucs went 7-9 from the free throw line in the quarter and were once again led by Obianozie who added 5 points in the quarter. The 4th quarter saw the Lady Senators attempt 13 free throws, making 12, to cut into the lead. Obianozie once again stepped up and slammed the door as she hit two 3's in a 1-minute span to put the game out of reach.
The Lady Bucs return to action after Christmas as they travel to Americus, GA to take part in the South GA Tech Holiday Classic on the 29th, 30th , and the 31st.
