Scooba, MS- The Shelton State softball team opened their season with sweep (8-4,11-5) of the East Mississippi Lady Lions.
Game 1:
Freshman Mackenzie Harper went the distance in Game 1 allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits while punching out 9 Lady Lions. Chloe Mitchell homered in her collegiate debut, going 2-3 with 3 RBI's while Aspen Gerald added a 2 run double.
The Lady Bucs opened up the scoring in the 3rd inning after Willeshia Lang and Lauren Coker smashed back-to-back doubles. Alana Spann added a base hit, setting up a Chloe Mitchell three-run homerun to put the Lady Bucs up 4-0. The Lady Bucs would stay quiet until 5th inning where they scored 4 two-out runs led by a 2-run double from Aspen Gerald. Down to their final out in the 5th inning, the Lady Lions were able to extend the game on a two out base hit. A late Lady Buc error allowed 2 EMCC runs to cross in the 7th inning.
Game 2:
Chloe Mitchell started in the circle in game 2, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits in 1 and 2/3's inning of work. Victoria Hagemann entered in relief, only giving up 2 hits in 5 and 1/3 innings. Aspen Gerald and Layla Bradshaw both had 3 hits.
The Lady Lions struck first as they took a 5-0 lead into the 4th inning. The Lady Bucs would explode for 5 runs in the 4th led by a few walks and hits by Chelsey Hogsed, Layla Bradshaw, and Alana Spann. The Lady Bucs would add 3 more in the 5th thanks to a Lady Lion error and hits by Aspen Gerald, Lauren Coker, and Tyeshia Willams. Shelton was not finished as they would add 3 more in the final frame behind hits from Jamie Hocutt, Willeshia Lang, and a Lauren Coker sac fly.
