Bucs Rout Cougars in ACCC Play
TUSCALOOSA – The No. 11 ranked Shelton State women's basketball team cruised to a 94-51 win over Lawson State in ACCC play Monday night.
Shelton State (15-3, 2-0 ACCC) topped the 90-point mark for the fourth time this season. The 94 points and 43-point margin of victory were the most by Bucs at home this year.
Shelton State scored the game's first eight points and raced to a 16-2 lead with just under four minutes left in the first quarter. The Bucs were also credited with two points when a Lawson State player scored in the wrong basket.
The Bucs exploded for 30 points in the second quarter to take a 51-18 halftime lead. Shelton State hit 9-of-15 field goals and 10-of-11 free throws in the second quarter. The defense also did its part holding the Cougars to 0-for-8 from the field in the second quarter.
Shelton State led 71-38 after three quarters, hitting four three pointers. The Bucs closed out the game with 23 points in the fourth quarter, making 9-of-16 shots.
Freshman guard Alana Obianozie (Madison, Ala.) was one of four Bucs in double figures. She paced the team with 20 points (7-for-12 FG) and added eight rebounds, seven steals and four assists. She has 35 points (14-for-23 FG) in her last two games.
Freshman guard Janiyah Bone (Madison, Ala.) added 17 points 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Sophomore guard Makala Hobdy (Troy, Ala.) had 11 points and a game-high eight assists.
Freshman forward Mattie Grace Parrish (Millport, Ala.) had 10 points and six rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench. She made 5-of-7 field goals in the win.
Breona Walker led the Cougars with 21 points.
Shelton State is back in action Thursday, Jan. 16 at rival Wallace-State Hanceville.
