PHENIX CITY - The Shelton State baseball team split a double header at Chattahoochee Valley on Friday afternoon, winning a 10-inning thriller 6-2 in game one before falling 7-0 in the nightcap.
Shelton State (19-5, 5-3 ACCC) scored four runs in the 10th inning to break a 2-2 deadlock in the opener.
Sophomore third baseman Brady Waugh, who entered the game in the seventh inning, drew a leadoff walk.
Sophomore shortstop Landen Ingram, who also entered the game in the seventh inning, sacrificed Waugh to second base.
Sophomore first baseman Tripp Gann, who had the game-tying pinch-hit single in the seventh inning, brought home Waugh with the go-ahead run with a single to left.
Gann was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and one walk in the double header.
Freshman catcher Grant Browning walked and sophomore right fielder Mason Steele blasted a three-run home run to right to push the lead to 6-2.
Freshman right hander Kenneth Dlddell, who entered the game in relief of sophomore left hander John Michael Pickens in the ninth, retired the Pirates in the 10th for his first career win.
Zach Johnpeer (0-1), the sixth of seven pitchers used by CVCC, took the loss.
Shelton State trailed 2-1 with one out in the seventh inning before freshman Jackson Henderson delivered a pinch-hit single and took second on a subsequent throwing error.
Gann rapped a single to center to score freshman pinch-runner Payton Zupancic with the tying run.
The Bucs left the bases loaded as the Pirates used four pitchers to wiggle out of trouble.
The Bucs left the bases loaded in the eighth and stranded two runners in scoring position in the ninth. In all, Shelton State left 14 runners on base.
Shelton State took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Steele singled, stole second and scored on sophomore centerfielder Pierce Dutton's RBI single.
Chatt Valley (9-16, 5-3 ACCC) tied the game on Travis Stautner's two-out double in the fourth.
The Pirates took the lead 2-1 with an unearned run in the fifth.
The Bucs used 19 players in game one.
Chatt Valley scored all seven runs in the first two innings in the 7-0 win in game two.
Tre Fulmer had a two-run triple in the first inning and Johnpeer hit a three-run homer in the five-run second inning.
Brodie Dixon (2-4) held the Bucs to three singles in the complete game shutout. Dixon got 13 fly ball outs in the win.
Sophomore JD Wilkins (3-2) took the loss.
The Bucs bullpen was outstanding on Friday, logging 9 1/3 scoreless innings and landing 20 of 30 first pitch strikes.
Pickens (3.1) and Diddell (1.2) combined for five scoreless innings in game one. Freshmen Gunner Dodd (3.1) and John Beasley (1.0) added 4 1/3 scoreless innings in game two.
The Bucs turned two double plays on defense.
Shelton State will another five-game week next week playing Bevill State and Gadsden State.
