Sullivan’s Walk-Off Lifts Bucs Past LSU Eunice
TUSCALOOSA - Freshman third baseman Slade Sullivan delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift No. 10 Shelton State to a 3-2 win over No. 2 LSU Eunice in game one of the South District Championship.
Shelton State (47-11) leads the best of three series 1-0 and needs one more win for it's eighth trip the JuCo World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.
Freshman second baseman James Graphos started the rally with a one-out single to left. He then moved into scoring position on a passed ball.
After a strikeout, pinch runner Brexton Taft moved to third on a wild pitch and sophomore first baseman Tripp Gann walked.
Sullivan came to the plate and smashed a 1-0 pitch to left field to bring home Taft with the winning run.
Will Mabry (9-1) worked 3 1/3 innings and suffered his first loss.
Sophomore John Michael Pickens (6-1) retired all 10 batters he faced for the win. He added three strikeouts.
Sophomore right-hander Mason Steele, freshman right hander Payton Zupancic and Pickens combined for 14 strikeouts.
Steele tied his career high with nine strikeouts in six innings of work. He has 16 strikeouts in 12 innings this post season.
Sullivan scored the tying run in the seventh inning when he drew a lead off walk and moved to third on two wild pitches. He scored on a sac fly to right field by sophomore shortstop Paxton Ponder to tie the game at 2-2.
LSU Eunice (52-4) scored an unearned run in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Tyson LeBlanc reached on a one-out single, stole second the stole third and scored on a throwing error by catcher Lawson Neel.
LSU Eunice scored in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Jordan Luna delivered a leadoff single and took second on a passed ball. After a single by Cash Riley, Luna scored on a sacrifice fly by Aiden Mouton.
The Bucs answered in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at 1-1. Neel and Ponder had back-to-back singles and sophomore left fielder Trenton Shirley stroked an RBI double to tie the game.
The series continues on Friday at 6 p.m.
Admission is $10 per person per day (cash or card accepted) at the main entrance of the college. Also fans are asked to use the Fire College Drive to access the campus and parking lots.
A number of food trucks will be on site this weekend, including Cajun Crème (ice cream and popsicles), Se7ens Food Truck and Southern Seafood Bistro (Friday).
