Tuscaloosa- Dominant pitching led the Lady Bucs to two ACCC wins over Gadsden State on Thursday (4-0, 7-2). Victoria Hagemann and Mackenzie Harper combined to give up just 2 runs on 8 hits over two complete games while striking out 10.
Game 1:
Freshman Victoria Hagemann pitched a complete game 2-hit shutout for the Lady Bucs in the opener. Both teams started slow before the Lady Bucs manufactured a run thanks to 2 walks (Layla Bradshaw and Lauren Coker) and a timely base hit from Aspen Gerald in the 3rd inning.
The Lady Cardinals had runners on base in each of the first 4 innings, but Hagemann and the stout Lady Buc defense kept the Cardinals off the board. The 5th inning saw the Lady Bucs explode with 4 singles (Chloe Mitchell, Willeshia Lang, Harley Johnson, and Chelsey Hogsed) and a double by Lauren Coker. A Gadsden State error helped push a run across as the Lady Bucs would lead 4-0. Both teams would remain quiet for the remainder of the game.
Willeshia Lang, Chelsey Hogsed, and Harley Johnson all had 2 hits apiece for the Lady Bucs.
Game 2:
Mackenzie Harper continued the excellence in the circle for the Lady Bucs as she went the distance allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits while punching out 8.
Harper allowed the first 3 Lady Cardinal hitters to reach base before closing the recording 3 consecutive outs to keep the score at 0-0. Harley Johnson was able to break open the scoring in the 2nd as Lauren Coker scored on her sacrifice fly to left field.
The Lady Buc offense came alive in the 3rd as they paired several walks with timely hits to score 4 in the inning to bring the lead to 5-0. Tyeshia Willams launched a home run in the 5th to cap off scoring for the Lady Bucs. Gadsden State would bring 2 runs across in the top of the 6th but it was not enough.
