Lady Bucs Down Walters State in Season Opener
Morristown, TN- The Shelton State Lady Bucs opened their season with a 67-51 win over perennial Tennessee JUCO power Walters State.
Shelton State was led in scoring by sophomore center Julie Nekolna and freshman guard Janiyah Bone who both posted 11-point games. Freshman guards Alana Obianozie and Arissa Jenkins paced the Lady Bucs in the rebounding department with 9 apiece. Sophomore point guard Makala Hobdy totaled 7 assists.
Overcoming a slow start that led to a 3-point deficit after the 1st quarter (16-13), the Lady Bucs battled back to take a 3-point lead going into the half (33-30), thanks to a buzzer beating 3 by sophomore point guard Jaylen Pleasant. Pleasant's three gave the Lady Bucs the lead for good. "Any road game is difficult but being a team's home opener makes it even harder," said head coach Madonna Thomspon on the sluggish start to the game. "Walters State is an extremely well coached, physical basketball team, and they came out ready to play."
The 3rd and 4th quarters followed the same script as the first two, physical and fast. Although after the break the Lady Bucs were up to the challenge, outscoring the Lady Senators by 13 points in the second half. "The response from the team coming out of halftime was great," said coach Thompson. "We really started to settle in about midway through the 3rd quarter and some of those hard shots started to fall." Forwards Lameria Thomas and Brianna Adams led the way in the second half for the Lady Bucs, both scoring 6 points.
The Lady Bucs wrap-up play in the Carlyle-Kragel Classic tomorrow as they face #15 Trinity Valley at 12:00 PM (EST). The game will be streamed live at the link below.
