Lady Bucs Down Cardinals 92-53
Gadsden, AL- The 10th ranked Shelton State Women's Basketball team ran their conference record to 4-0 and overall record to 17-3 after defeating the Gadsden State Lady Cardinals 92-53.
The Lady Bucs were led by freshman Arissa Jenkins who knocked down four 3 pointers in route to a career-high 16 points. Laylah Davis also buried 4 trey balls to finish with 13 points and Makala Hobdy added 13 as well to go along with 5 steals. Lameria Thomas posted 11 points and Brianna Adams pulled down a team high 7 rebounds. Jaylen Pleasant dished out 6 assists.
The 1st quarter was all Lady Bucs as they outscored Gadsden State 29-5 in the quarter despite going zero for their first seven from beyond the arc. Alana Obianozie scored 8 of her 9 points in the opening frame for Shelton. The Lady Cardinals found their footing in the 2nd quarter as the Lady Bucs only outscored the Cards by 5 (18-13), Gadsden was led by Kamoriah Gaines who scored 14 in the game. "We cannot continue to have slow starts, especially on the road," said head coach Madonna Thompson. "Our defense continues to have to carry a major load for us to win ball games."
The 2nd half was a much closer contest as the Lady Bucs only outscored the Lady Cardinals by 12 over the final 20 minutes. Makala Hobdy and Julie Nekolna scored 17 combined points in the 3rd quarter. The Lady Bucs finished the game shooting 32% (10-31) from 3 and 75% (12-16) from the free throw line.
The Lady Bucs return to action on Monday, January 27th, as they travel to Wadley, AL to take on the Southern Union Lady Bison at 5:30 PM.
