Shelton State Cruises Past Calhoun, 80-45
TUSCALOOSA – The No. 9 ranked Shelton State women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 11 games with an 80-45 win over Calhoun Community College on Monday at the Umphrey Center.
Shelton State (20-3, 7-0 ACCC) has reached the 20-win mark for the 25th consecutive year. The Bucs have 26, 20-win seasons overall.
The Bucs have also won 13 games by 30 or more points this season, including each of its last four games. The wins have come against Gadsden State, Southern Union, Bishop State and Calhoun by an average of 44.3 points per game.
Calhoun (11-10, 2-4 ACCC) actually led 2-0 in the first 30 seconds of the game before the Bucs took control. Shelton State led 6-5 and then exploded for a 13-0 run to take an 18-5 lead. The Bucs outscored the Warhawks 13-7 in the second quarter to take a 37-16 halftime lead.
Shelton State shot 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from the floor in the 26-point third quarter to extend the lead 63-33.
Alana Obianozie and Lameria Thomas both paced the Bucs with double-doubles against the Warhawks. Obianozie had a game-high 26 points and added 13 rebounds. She made 10-of-19 field goal attempts and added six assists. Thomas had 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive glass.
Julie Nekolna and Arissa Jenkins also tallied double figures for the Bucs. Nekolna scored 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor. Jenkins had 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Shelton State hosts Coastal Alabama South on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
